A normalized scale for comparing drive time and transit time across America's biggest cities. Each mode is scored against its own national average, so 100 always means a typical trip — and both indices read the same way: below 100 is faster than normal, above 100 is slower.
Each mode is anchored to its own 2024 national average from Census data. A drive-time score of 100 equals the 27.2-minute national mean drive commute; a transit-time score of 100 equals the ~50-minute national mean transit commute. Scoring each mode against its own norm means 100 always reads the same way — a typical trip for that mode — so a city that's average to drive and average to ride lands near 100 on both.
Two scores are reported for every city, each measured against its own mode baseline:
Relative time cost of commuting by car versus the national drive norm. Built from the city's ACS car/all-mode commute time, then adjusted upward where INRIX shows severe peak-hour congestion — a long trip that is also stop-and-go is worse than one that flows.
Relative time cost of commuting by bus/rail versus the national transit norm. Dense rail cities land near or below 100; sprawling bus-only networks run above it. Read it alongside the network tier — a low score means little if only 2% of workers can actually reach their job by transit.
Commute time is not distance — it is the combined product of where people can afford to live, where the jobs cluster, and how the network between them performs. The same forces recur across the rankings.
Sort by either index, search a city, or filter by transit network strength. Amber = private driving (100 = 27.2 min), blue = public transit (100 = 50 min). The dark tick at each bar's midpoint marks that mode's 100 baseline, so bars reaching past it are slower than the national norm for that mode. Population rank is by city proper (latest Census estimates).
